What a personalised book costs and what's included
16/09/2026
The price of a personalised book item by item: what the digital version includes, what print and delivery cost, what's extra and how to save.

A digital personalised book costs NZ$14.99 — that covers the whole story, every illustration, a downloadable PDF and the online reader. A printed hardback is NZ$69.99, plus NZ$12.99 for delivery. The audiobook is optional at NZ$5.99. These are one-off payments: no subscription and no fee for downloading again.
What each price covers
You don't order print instead of the digital book, you order it on top: first the book is created, you read it through and fine-tune it, and only then do you send the finished version to print. That's why the prices add up rather than being an either-or choice.
| Item | Price | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Digital book | NZ$14.99 | A story written for your child, 12 illustrated spreads, a cover with their name, a dedication page, PDF and online reader, 3 illustration regenerations |
| Audiobook | NZ$5.99 | The whole story read aloud in a voice you choose, listening in the reader, a QR code in the printed book |
| Printed book | NZ$69.99 | A4 portrait format, hardback binding, heavy coated paper, full-colour printing |
| Delivery | NZ$12.99 | Delivery to any address you choose, with parcel tracking |
| Extra regeneration | NZ$0.69 each | Only once the 3 included regenerations are used up |
Included, even where others charge extra
The things people ask about most, because they're used to seeing them as add-ons.
- Every illustrationYou don't pay per page or per character. The price covers the whole book — 12 illustrated spreads, the cover and the dedication page — however many heroes you put in it.
- Unlimited text editsOnce the book is generated, you can rewrite any text in it and the PDF re-typesets itself. It isn't a paid “revision”, just normal work on a finished book.
- Illustration regenerations3 regenerations are included and the editor shows how many you have left. Each new version is saved as a variant, so you can always go back to the original — a try that doesn't work out costs you nothing.
- PDF and repeat downloadsThe book stays in your account and you can download it again whenever you like. There's no charge for repeat downloads or for access to the reader.
- Language and illustration styleChoosing from 30 languages and 20 illustration styles is part of setting up the book, not a premium option.
What costs extra
Delivery is added to the print order and is charged per parcel, not per copy — a second copy in the same parcel doesn't double it. The audiobook is an add-on: you can add it straight away with your order or any time later in your account, at the same price.
You only pay for an illustration regeneration once you've used up the included ones — after that it's NZ$0.69 each, bought in the editor one at a time or several at once. In practice most books are finished without paying anything extra: dodgy-looking illustrations are checked and regenerated automatically before you even see the book.
What you never pay for: storing the book, downloading the PDF again, rewriting the text or changing the dedication.
Three typical orders and what you pay
Real examples show best which items add up and which never appear at all. None of this is a bundle — every item can be ordered on its own.
What doesn't change the price
The digital book has one price, however elaborate your ideas are. More heroes don't make it dearer — siblings, Mum and Dad and the dog in one book cost the same as a single child. Neither does the language or the illustration style, even though some styles take more work than others.
The same goes for the length of the dedication, the number of text edits or how many times you download the book. That's deliberate: while you're setting up the book, you shouldn't have any reason to skimp on what makes it a book for your child.
The only two things that genuinely move the price are a physical parcel (printing and delivery) and illustration regenerations beyond the ones included.
Why a personalised book costs more than one off the shelf
With an ordinary bookshop book, the cost of the text and illustrations is spread across the whole print run — thousands of copies share a single illustrator's work. With a personalised book nothing gets spread: the story is written for one child, and each illustration is made once, for one book, and never used again.
The second difference is printing. A personalised book is printed as a single copy to order, not in a print run — there's no warehouse and no risk of half a pallet left over, but there's no bulk discount either.
That's why you can't compare offers on the price tag alone. Compare what's included: whether the text and illustrations are created after you order, how many edits are free, and whether printing and delivery are in the price or on top of it. How to tell a name simply printed into a stock book from real personalisation is covered in our introduction to personalised books.
How to pay less
None of these is a trick — they're options that really are there at checkout, people just often don't know about them.
- 1Buy several books with a family bundleGift vouchers also come in bundles for several books, which work out cheaper per book than buying them one by one. Handy if you know you'll be buying more presents over the coming months — just check how long the voucher is valid.
- 2Send the book straight to the recipientWhen you order print, you can enter any delivery address. It saves forwarding it on and a second parcel when the present is heading to Grandma's anyway.
- 3Review the printed bookFor an approved review with a photo you get a coupon for a free audiobook with your next book; for a review with a video, a discount on your next digital book. The coupon has a limited validity, so it only makes sense if you're really planning another book.
- 4Add the audio laterYou can buy the audiobook any time at the same price. If you're not sure your child will use it, there's no need to decide at checkout.
How to pay
You can pay by card or mobile wallet through a secure payment gateway — your card details never reach us at all.
The book starts generating as soon as the payment is confirmed. If it needs to arrive in time for a birthday, our article on timings explains how much leeway to allow.
Discount codes, gift vouchers and partner codes all go into the same field at checkout and are taken off before you pay. You can use one code per order; a voucher, though, can be spent gradually across several items and its remaining balance carries over.
