A made-to-measure book
Henry means “ruler of the home” — so give him a story he gets to rule
Henry is a name kings carried for a thousand years, yet at home it usually shrinks to Harry, Hal or Hen. A personalised picture book lets the grand version and the cosy one share the same pages — with your boy in the lead role.

Here's how a book for Henry could look
Pick a theme, upload a photo, and your child becomes the hero of the story — with their name on the cover and inside.

Why a book with Henry on the cover
Henry is a name that sounds finished. Two syllables, a firm start and a soft ending — HEN-ree — so it sits comfortably in a sentence read aloud: “Henry took a deep breath and stepped off the ramp.” It never trips the tongue, and it doesn't need explaining to anyone, which makes it a natural fit for a title on a cover.
It also carries a bit of weight. For most of English history Henry was the name of kings, so seeing it printed above an adventure has a slightly regal ring that a child picks up on even without knowing why. A boy called Henry rarely gets to see his own name on a shop shelf beside superheroes and dragons; in his own book it is the first word of the title.
The story itself can use whichever form your family actually says. If he is Henry at school but Harry at the dinner table, the book can follow that: the formal name on the cover and the everyday one when his mum or dad calls him in from the garden in the story. Children notice that difference instantly — it is the moment the book stops being about “a boy” and starts being about him.
There is also a practical bonus in a name with a ready-made nickname. A story can use both forms to change its tone: “Henry” for the brave, serious moments — facing the dark forest, pressing the big red button — and “Harry” for the warm ones at the end, when he is tucked in and safe. Read aloud a few nights running, that small switch becomes part of the rhythm he waits for.
Where the name Henry comes from
Henry goes back to the old Germanic name Heimirich, built from heim, “home”, and rīc, “ruler” or “power”. So the literal meaning is something like “ruler of the home” — a fitting description, many parents would say, of a small boy who runs the household from about the age of two.
The name came to England with the Normans in the eleventh century, in the French form Henri. From there it took root deeply: eight English kings were named Henry, from Henry I in the 1100s to Henry VIII in the Tudor era. Across Europe it took local shapes — Heinrich in Germany, Henri in France, Enrico in Italy, Enrique in Spain, Hendrik in the Netherlands.
In New Zealand the name has its own local form too. Henare is the Māori transliteration of Henry, and it has been carried as both a given name and a surname for generations — a reminder that Henry arrived here early and became part of the country's story, not just England's.
After spending much of the twentieth century as a slightly old-fashioned choice, Henry came back strongly in the 2000s and 2010s, along with other classic names that sound sturdy rather than trendy. Today it is a familiar sight on New Zealand birth registrations and on kindy name labels alike — popular enough to feel friendly, traditional enough never to sound dated.
Harry, Hal, Hen and other ways to say Henry
- Henry — The full form — what goes on the birth certificate, the school roll and, naturally, the book cover.
- Harry — The oldest nickname of all. In medieval England Henry was routinely pronounced and written Harry, which is why Shakespeare's King Henry V rallies his troops with “Cry God for Harry!”. Today it is the everyday home name in many families.
- Hal — A short, old-fashioned pet form made famous as “Prince Hal”, the young Henry V. Slightly cheeky and very fond — the sort of name used by a grandad.
- Hen or Henny — A playful shortening used mostly for little ones. Siblings especially love it, because it is quick to shout across a playground.
- Hank — An American nickname for Henry that pops up now and then as a joke or a term of endearment — sounds like a cowboy, which some small boys find highly appealing.
- Henare — The Māori form of the name. Some families use it alongside Henry as an affectionate or whānau name.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️
We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.
The book was a gift… I’ll find out how happy it makes them… but it’s very beautiful
I have the books ready as a gift, so I’m already looking forward to handing them over
An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)
Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.
The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction
I got the book for a birthday and the princess wouldn’t put it down.
The book is very nice. The pictures look very nice, they're not blurry. The book really made us happy.
Very beautiful book, I always have trouble choosing in a bookshop, something bothers me about every one, or I can't find a theme I'd want.. here I can make up anything
A beautiful book that has its own unique magic! ❤️ The story is wonderfully done and the fact that your very own child becomes the main hero is absolutely amazing. My son was thrilled with the book and so was I. 🥰 A great idea, beautiful illustrations and a wonderful keepsake that we will happily come back to. I highly recommend it to all parents who want to make their children happy and give them the feeling that they are the heroes of their own story. ❤️📚
The book is wonderful! Exactly as I had dreamed it and designed it, a beautiful keepsake for my little son ♥️
