A made-to-measure book
Benjamin, “Son of the Right Hand”, Takes the Lead in His Own Storybook
From Jacob's youngest son to Beatrix Potter's Benjamin Bunny, this name has been part of stories for a very long time. Now your Benjamin (or Ben, or Benji) can be the hero of one written just for him.

Why a storybook suits a boy named Benjamin
Benjamin is a long name for a small boy, and that is part of its charm. Three syllables, BEN-ja-min, stretch right across a book cover, while at home most families shorten it to Ben before he can even walk. A personalised storybook gets to use both: the full, slightly grand Benjamin in the title, and the quick, warm Ben whenever a friend calls out to him mid-adventure.
Benjamin also has a head start in children's books. Beatrix Potter gave the world The Tale of Benjamin Bunny back in 1904, so the name has been sitting on nursery shelves for well over a century. A story where your Benjamin, rather than a rabbit in a blue jacket, is the one climbing over garden walls feels like a natural next chapter.
Because the story is written in English from the start, the name sits in it exactly as you'd say it aloud. Lines like "Ben grabbed the glider and ran" or "Benjamin, are you sure about this?" read naturally, and the illustrations show a boy who looks like your son, built from the photo you upload. If he is Benji at home, write him in as Benji; the book follows what your family actually calls him.
There's a practical reason too. A name with a built-in nickname gives a story two voices: the narrator can say Benjamin when something important happens, and his friends can shout Ben when they need him quickly. Children notice that difference, and hearing both forms of their own name makes the book feel like it really knows them.
Where the name Benjamin comes from
Benjamin comes from the Hebrew Binyamin, usually translated as "son of the right hand". In the ancient world the right hand stood for strength and favour, so the name carries a sense of a child who is cherished and trusted. Some scholars read it instead as "son of the south", since the right hand faced south when you looked towards the sunrise.
In the Book of Genesis, Benjamin is the youngest of Jacob's twelve sons and the second child of Rachel. Rachel, dying after his birth, named him Ben-Oni, "son of my sorrow", but Jacob renamed him Benjamin. That story of a baby given a hopeful name instead of a sad one is a big reason the name still feels warm today. Benjamin also became the ancestor of one of the tribes of Israel, and "the Benjamin of the family" has long been a way to describe the youngest, most fussed-over child.
From the Bible the name passed into English during the Reformation, when parents went looking for Old Testament names. Benjamin Franklin made it famous on both sides of the Atlantic, and in Aotearoa it has been a steady choice for boys for decades. It has never had a sudden boom and fall, which is why you'll meet Benjamins in primary school classrooms as well as among grandads. It also works well beside the short, punchy names now common in New Zealand: Benjamin is the formal version, and Ben is the everyday one.
The short form has a famous namesake of its own. Big Ben, the great bell in London's clock tower, is widely thought to be named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who oversaw its installation in the 1850s. So a boy called Ben shares a nickname with one of the best-known sounds in the world, which is a fun fact to slip into a bedtime chat.
Ben, Benji, Benny: what to call him in the story
- Benjamin — The full name: on birth certificates, school rolls, and when a parent is calling across the playground with real intent. It makes a satisfying book title because it has weight.
- Ben — The everyday form most Benjamins grow up with. Short, friendly and easy to shout, which makes it ideal for dialogue in a story.
- Benji — A softer, playful version that families often use for toddlers and preschoolers. Plenty of boys keep it well into school.
- Benny — An affectionate, slightly old-fashioned nickname, often used by grandparents. It has a bouncy rhythm that suits a cheeky character.
- Benjy — Another spelling of Benji, a little more traditional. Worth choosing deliberately if that's how it's written in your family.
- Benj — A clipped, teen-friendly version. Less common for little boys, but some families use it from the start.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️
We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.
The book was a gift… I’ll find out how happy it makes them… but it’s very beautiful
I have the books ready as a gift, so I’m already looking forward to handing them over
An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)
Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.
The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction
I got the book for a birthday and the princess wouldn’t put it down.
The book is very nice. The pictures look very nice, they're not blurry. The book really made us happy.
Very beautiful book, I always have trouble choosing in a bookshop, something bothers me about every one, or I can't find a theme I'd want.. here I can make up anything
A beautiful book that has its own unique magic! ❤️ The story is wonderfully done and the fact that your very own child becomes the main hero is absolutely amazing. My son was thrilled with the book and so was I. 🥰 A great idea, beautiful illustrations and a wonderful keepsake that we will happily come back to. I highly recommend it to all parents who want to make their children happy and give them the feeling that they are the heroes of their own story. ❤️📚
The book is wonderful! Exactly as I had dreamed it and designed it, a beautiful keepsake for my little son ♥️
