A made-to-measure book
Evelyn was a Norman surname long before it was her name — now it's the hero's
Three syllables, a tall capital E and a history that runs from medieval England to today's classrooms: Evelyn sounds lovely read aloud. Here she is the hero of her own picture book, with her face drawn from your photo and her name on the cover.

Why Evelyn makes a good storybook hero
Evelyn is a name with three soft syllables, EV-uh-lin, and a story told aloud gives every one of them room. When a child hears her own name read out at the start of a chapter, in the middle of a rescue and on the very last page, the story stops being about "a girl" and becomes about her. That is the whole idea behind a book with Evelyn as the hero.
The name works especially well in a title. "Evelyn and the Little Red Tractor" or "Evelyn and the First Brave Step" has a gentle rhythm: a stressed first beat, then two light ones that roll straight into the rest of the title. On the cover it sits as a word of real length, seven letters with a tall capital E, so it holds its own above the illustration instead of disappearing.
Inside the story there is another advantage. Evelyn can be the formal, slightly grown-up name the narrator uses when something important is happening, while a friend or a parent in the story can call her Evie. Many families already switch between the two at home, so a book that does the same sounds like their own household rather than a stranger's.
And because the heroine is drawn from a photo of your daughter, the Evelyn on the cover looks like the Evelyn holding the book, whether she is in a spacesuit on an alien plain or standing next to a tractor in a farmyard.
Where the name Evelyn comes from
Evelyn started life as a surname, not a first name. It came to England with the Normans, most likely from the Old French Aveline, a diminutive of a Germanic name element "Avi" or "Avila" whose original meaning is uncertain. You will often see it explained as "wished-for child" or linked to the Latin avis, "bird", but those readings are later guesses rather than settled fact, and it is fairer to say the meaning has been lost somewhere in the Middle Ages.
For centuries Evelyn was used for boys as often as for girls, usually by families passing on a surname. The seventeenth-century diarist John Evelyn carried it as a family name, and the English novelist Evelyn Waugh was a man, which surprises a lot of people today. Waugh pronounced it "EEV-lin", an older British pronunciation you can still hear occasionally; most New Zealanders say "EV-uh-lin".
During the twentieth century the name drifted firmly to the girls' side, then faded for several decades and sounded like a grandmother's name. That made it ripe for a comeback. Over the last fifteen years or so Evelyn has climbed back up the charts across the English-speaking world, reaching the top ten in the United States and becoming a familiar name in New Zealand and Australian classrooms too. Parents who choose it today often like exactly that mix: a name with history and a vintage feel that still sounds fresh on a little girl.
Because Evelyn has never been tied to a single saint or feast day, there is no fixed name day to celebrate. Her birthday is the day the name gets its moment, and a book where Evelyn is the one who steers the rocket or befriends the new kid in the park is a fitting way to mark it.
Evie, Eve, Lyn: what Evelyn gets called
If you can't decide which name the story should use, Evelyn for the narration and Evie for the people who love her is a pairing that reads naturally on the page. Below are the forms families use most, and where each one tends to turn up.
- Evelyn — The full name, for introductions, school rolls, and the moments in a story when the narrator wants the scene to feel important.
- Evie — By far the most common short form, and in recent years popular enough to be given as a name in its own right. Warm, quick and easy for younger siblings to say.
- Eve — A shorter, slightly more grown-up clipping that some families use as she gets older.
- Evvie or Evs — Playful versions mostly heard at home or among friends; Evs is a very Kiwi and Aussie way to shorten almost anything.
- Lyn or Lynnie — Built from the end of the name instead of the start. Less common today, but a sweet option if Evie is already taken by a cousin.
- Evelyn, in full voice — The whole name, said slowly and firmly, is what many parents reserve for the moment shoes really do need to go on. In a story it signals that something big is about to happen.
- Ev — A one-syllable nickname with a sporty, tomboyish feel, the kind a teammate shouts across a netball court.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️
We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.
The book was a gift… I’ll find out how happy it makes them… but it’s very beautiful
I have the books ready as a gift, so I’m already looking forward to handing them over
An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)
Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.
The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction
I got the book for a birthday and the princess wouldn’t put it down.
The book is very nice. The pictures look very nice, they're not blurry. The book really made us happy.
Very beautiful book, I always have trouble choosing in a bookshop, something bothers me about every one, or I can't find a theme I'd want.. here I can make up anything
A beautiful book that has its own unique magic! ❤️ The story is wonderfully done and the fact that your very own child becomes the main hero is absolutely amazing. My son was thrilled with the book and so was I. 🥰 A great idea, beautiful illustrations and a wonderful keepsake that we will happily come back to. I highly recommend it to all parents who want to make their children happy and give them the feeling that they are the heroes of their own story. ❤️📚
The book is wonderful! Exactly as I had dreamed it and designed it, a beautiful keepsake for my little son ♥️
