Finn: a name from Irish legend, ready for a story of his own

Long before Finn turned up on New Zealand school rolls, Fionn mac Cumhaill was outwitting giants and tasting the Salmon of Knowledge. Give your Finn a book where he is the one on the cover and at the heart of every page.

Here's how a book for Finn could look

Pick a theme, upload a photo, and your child becomes the hero of the story — with their name on the cover and inside.

The covers above are samples — the illustrations were created by artificial intelligence and the children in them aren't real. Your book is made from the photo you upload.

Why a book with Finn's name works so well

Finn is four letters, one syllable and a double n at the end, which makes it one of the first names a child learns to spot on a page. Many young Finns can pick out their own name long before they can read a full sentence, so seeing FINN in big letters on a cover is a small thrill that does not wear off.

The name also sits beautifully in a story. It is short enough to drop into fast-moving lines ("Finn ducked. Finn ran. Finn laughed.") without slowing the rhythm, and it reads naturally aloud at bedtime, whether it is Mum, Dad or a grandparent doing the voices. Because the hero carries your son's real likeness from the photo you upload, the boy in the pictures is clearly him, not a generic character who happens to share his name.

And Finn comes with a ready-made tradition of adventure. In Irish myth, Fionn was a hunter, a leader of warriors and a clever problem-solver. That history gives a modern story plenty to play with: a Finn who keeps his cool on the football pitch, follows a compass through a canyon or discovers his wand actually works.

The name also behaves well in a title. Because Finn is so compact, a book called Finn and the Compass of the Green Canyon still has room for the adventure itself, and the name stands out in large type instead of being squeezed. Say it at story time and there is nothing to stumble over: no silent letters, no tricky vowels, and the same sound whether it is read by a Kiwi, an Irish or a Dutch grandparent. Little brothers and sisters who are still learning to talk can usually manage Finn early, which is one reason it so often becomes the name the whole family shouts across the beach.

Where the name Finn comes from

Finn is most often traced to the Irish Gaelic name Fionn, meaning "fair", "white" or "bright". It was originally a description, the kind of name you might give a fair-haired child, and over time it became one of the best-known names in Irish storytelling.

The most famous bearer is Fionn mac Cumhaill, anglicised as Finn McCool. In one tale he is a boy apprentice cooking the Salmon of Knowledge for a poet. He burns his thumb on the fish, sucks it to cool it and gains all the wisdom of the world, which is why he is said to chew his thumb whenever he needs to work something out. In another, Finn builds the Giant's Causeway so he can cross the sea to Scotland, then escapes a much bigger giant by disguising himself as a baby in a cradle. Brains over size is a very good theme for a picture book hero.

There is a second, separate root. In Old Norse, Finnr was a common personal name, and Finn appears in the Old English poem Beowulf as a Frisian king. That is part of why Finn feels at home across Ireland, Scandinavia, the Netherlands and Germany alike. Readers may also know it as the surname of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, a boy who sets off down the Mississippi on a raft.

Today Finn is used as a standalone name, not just a short form, and it has been a familiar choice for New Zealand families for years. It fits the Kiwi taste for short, outdoorsy, no-fuss names that work just as well on a rugby team sheet as on a birthday cake.

The legend travelled to Scotland too. In the 1760s James Macpherson published poems he claimed to have translated from the ancient bard Ossian, and their hero, Fingal, is a Scottish retelling of Fionn. Fingal's Cave on the island of Staffa takes its name from him, and the poems were so widely read that Napoleon is said to have carried a copy. So a boy called Finn shares his name with a giant-builder, a thumb-sucking sage, a Scottish king of song and a Mississippi rafter. Not a bad crew to bring along on a first adventure.

Nicknames and other forms of Finn

  • Finn — The everyday form and, for most boys, the full name on the birth certificate. Short enough that it rarely gets shortened further.
  • Finny — The affectionate version for toddlers, siblings and grandparents, often used at bedtime or when he is in trouble but not really in trouble.
  • Finnster / Finn-man — Playful family and team nicknames, the sort a coach or an older cousin comes up with.
  • Fionn — The original Irish spelling, pronounced much like Finn (roughly "Fyun" in some Irish accents). Some families choose it to keep the link to the legend visible.
  • Finley, Finlay, Finnegan, Finnian — Longer names that are commonly shortened to Finn. If your son is officially a Finley or Finnegan but everyone calls him Finn, the book can use whichever he answers to.
  • Fynn / Fin — Alternative spellings you may see, Fynn especially in German-speaking families. Spell it exactly as he does and that is how it appears in the story.

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction

Yes. You type the name the way you want it to appear, so the cover can say Finn while the story itself calls him Finny, or the other way round, as long as you set it up in the wizard.
